It has been well documented that the physical, mental health and social benefits of keeping active within groups and clubs as we age brings about better life outcomes. So what better way to get started on a new lease of life than joining in the upcoming Peel Walking Football Community Have a Go event Friday March 8th.
Football is the most popular played team sport in Australia and local clubs and organizations are ready and willing to help older Aussies adopt a healthier lifestyle by putting their boots back on …… or even encourage them to put them on for the first time.
Peel Regional Football Council with the support of DLGSC and Football West are bringing Walking Football to Peel and PRFC Chairman Jim Webb hopes to take the Walking Football concept around the region.
“Walking Football is a short format game which originated in the UK and has become hugely popular there. With over half of our football fans in WA over the age of 45, this is an age appropriate accessible version of the game which can actually be far more challenging than you imagine”.
“After Mandurah City FC successfully trialled a pilot program late last year the aim now is to attract players from across all walks of life and to create a local league which is both fun based and social but also allows opportunities for those players looking for further challenges to move into a Peel representative squad playing against other regions.”
Minister for Sport Senator Bridget McKenzie recently hailed the physical, mental health and social benefits of Walking Football.
“As outlined in the Government’s National Sport Plan – Sport 2030 – no matter what your age and no matter what your stage of life, we’re encouraging all Australians to embrace the philosophy of ‘Movement for Life’,” she said.
“Physical activity for over 65s is not a one-size-fits-all proposition. If we can get people over 65 back into their local clubs, participating in sport, we know we’re going to see positive benefits to the health budget, both mental health and physical health, and we also know the power of sport extends to social connectedness.”
