On This Day... in 1835 Melbourne was 'settled' by free settlers from Van Diemen's Land, the Vaccum Cleaner was patented in 1901, in 1936 Donald Duck appeared for the first time in a comic strip, The Doors disbanded in 1973, in 1988 the quadriplegic John McClean swam the English Channel, and we lost Charles Bronson in 2003, Wes Craven passed away at the age of 76 in 2015, and US actress Valerie Harper died in 2019 at the age of 80.
