Today is International Tiger Day... a day dedicated to one of the world's most magnificent animals.
It was first established back in 2010 after world leaders met in Russia with one goal - to help save wild tigers from extinction. At the time, there were thought to be as few as 3,200 wild tigers left on Earth, with habitat loss and poaching pushing them dangerously close to disappearing forever.
The good news is that conservation efforts are making a difference. While tigers are still endangered, their numbers have slowly started to recover in some parts of the world, thanks to protected reserves and anti-poaching programs.
Now, if there are any kids listening, here are some amazing tiger facts...
Did you know no two tigers have the same stripes? Just like our fingerprints, every tiger has its own unique pattern.
Tigers are also incredible swimmers. Unlike most cats, they actually love the water and can swim for up to six kilometres in one go.
They're the largest members of the cat family, with some Siberian tigers weighing more than 300 kilograms - that's about the same as four grown adults!
And here's a cool one... a tiger's roar can be heard from up to three kilometres away. Imagine hearing that while you're camping!
So today is a reminder that these incredible animals need our help, because protecting tigers also helps protect the forests and wildlife that share their home. After all, the world would be a much quieter place without the roar of a tiger. π
