Do you know how thermal clothing actually works?!

Have you ever wondered how those really thin thermal tops can keep you warmer than a big bulky jumper?
Well, here's the science... they don't actually create heat. Your body is producing heat all the time, and thermals are cleverly designed to keep that heat close to your body instead of letting it escape.
Now, part of the secret is in how they're made. Many thermal fabrics are knitted or woven with tiny textured fibres or little pockets that trap a thin layer of warm air next to your skin. That trapped air acts like insulation – a bit like the air trapped inside a double-glazed window.
The other clever part is that thermals are made from fibres like merino wool or high-tech synthetics that pull sweat away from your skin. Because if your clothes get damp, you lose heat much faster. So they keep you warm and dry at the same time.
So next time you put on a thermal, remember… it's not the fabric making you warm – it's your own body! The thermal is simply acting like your own personal insulation system, trapping your heat and stopping the cold from stealing it away.
Pretty clever for something that's only a few millimetres thick!
