Today is National Avocado Day, so let's celebrate the fruit that's somehow become the unofficial mascot of brunch!
Yes... avocado is actually a fruit, not a vegetable. In fact, it's technically a large berry because it has one big seed in the middle.
They've been around for more than 9,000 years, originally growing in Central America, and they're now one of Australia's favourite foods.
Not only are they delicious, they're incredibly good for you too. Avocados are packed with heart-healthy fats, fibre to help keep you feeling fuller for longer, and they're loaded with vitamins and potassium. In fact, they often contain more potassium than a banana, which helps support healthy muscles, nerves and blood pressure.
Here's a fun one for the kids... avocados don't actually ripen while they're still on the tree. They only begin to soften after they're picked, so farmers can leave them hanging until they're ready to harvest.
And if you've ever wondered why they turn brown so quickly, it's simply because they react with oxygen. A squeeze of lemon or lime juice helps keep them green for longer.
So whether you love yours smashed on toast, in guacamole or sliced into a salad... here's to one of nature's tastiest superfoods. Happy National Avocado Day! 🥑
