Today is World Chocolate Day… and yes, it's the perfect excuse to eat that extra block of chocolate guilt-free!
The date, July 7, marks the anniversary of chocolate's arrival in Europe back in 1550, after Spanish explorers brought cacao beans from the Americas. Of course, the Olmecs and Mayans had been enjoying cacao thousands of years before that, although their version was a bitter drink – nothing like the creamy chocolate we know and love today!
The world's first solid chocolate bar wasn't invented until 1847, by English chocolatier Joseph Fry, paving the way for modern chocolate bars.
And here's a sweet little fact... it takes around 400 cacao beans to make just one pound – or about 450 grams – of chocolate.
Today, people around the globe celebrate by baking, sharing, gifting… or simply treating themselves to a favourite chocolate bar.
So whether you're a dark chocolate devotee, a milk chocolate lover, or firmly in the "white chocolate counts" camp… happy World Chocolate Day!
