Today is National Watermelon Day, so we’re celebrating the fruit that tastes like summer in a slice! π
Now, here’s a fun fact… watermelon is made up of around 92% water, which is why it’s such a refreshing choice on a hot day and a great way to help keep your body hydrated.
But it’s not just a tasty treat.... watermelon is packed with nutritional benefits too. It’s low in calories, contains vitamins A and C to support your immune system and healthy skin, and it’s rich in an antioxidant called lycopene - the same compound that gives tomatoes their red colour and helps protect our cells.
Watermelons have been around for thousands of years, with evidence showing they were grown in ancient Egypt more than 4,000 years ago. Egyptians even placed them in tombs because they believed they’d provide nourishment in the afterlife.
And here’s a fun one - watermelon is technically a fruit, but botanically it’s a type of berry called a pepo, putting it in the same family as cucumbers and pumpkins.
There are more than 1,000 varieties grown around the world, including yellow and orange-fleshed versions.
So whether you like it sliced, cubed or blended into a drink… today is the perfect excuse to enjoy some juicy watermelon.
Happy National Watermelon Day! π
