Today is National Police Remembrance Day... a day to pause and remember police officers across Australia, New Zealand and the South-West Pacific who have lost their lives as a result of their service.

It’s held every year on September 29, and the tradition in Australia dates back to 1989.
The date is also the feast day of Saint Michael the Archangel, the patron saint of police officers.

Today, police communities come together for services, marches and wreath-laying ceremonies, remembering those who never made it home... and recognising the families, friends and colleagues who continue to carry their loss.

You’ll also see the traditional blue and white chequerboard ribbon worn today as a symbol of remembrance.

So, wherever you are this morning, it’s simply a day to pause, remember and say thank you to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities.
