Do you know why Magpies swoop you in the Springtime?

Gunners & Ali - Ali's Random Facts

Wednesday, 30 September 2026 - 2 minutes

Now Spring has begun, so has the annual Magpie Air Force!

Magpies are a big part of our local wildlife, but from September to November, some dads become VERY protective of their nests.

Basically, if you get too close, they might decide you’re the enemy and come swooping in!

So if you spot a nesting magpie, slow down, give it plenty of space... and if you’re on a bike or scooter, hop off and walk past.

A hat and sunglasses can help protect your face, and if there’s a particularly cranky magpie on your usual route… take a different way!

And remember, magpies are protected native birds... they’re not being naughty, they’re just being very serious dads!

Luckily, the swooping usually stops once breeding season is over.
