Today is National Work Like a Dog Day… and if you've been up since 4 o'clock this morning like us, I'd say we're already celebrating!
The saying "work like a dog" actually goes back to working dogs – think sheepdogs, sled dogs, farm dogs, rescue dogs and police dogs. These animals weren't sitting on the couch binge-watching Netflix… they were bred to work hard, stay focused and help humans get the job done. That's where the expression comes from.
The funny thing is, we also say "it's a dog's life," meaning an easy, carefree existence. So which is it? Well… both! Working dogs are incredibly driven and genuinely enjoy having a job to do, while our pampered pet dogs have mastered the art of sleeping 12 to 14 hours a day and somehow still looking exhausted afterwards!
So today is really about giving a little recognition to the people who quietly put in the hard yards every day… whether you're on a building site, behind a desk, on the farm, in a classroom, or on the breakfast radio shift before the sun comes up.
So, if you're working like a dog today… here's hoping you get to enjoy a dog's life when you knock off!
