Lakelands Library is proud to host Art for Peace, featuring works by renowned spiritual teacher and artist Sri Chinmoy (Shree Chin-Moyer), centred around his signature motif, the soul-bird. A global philosopher, musician, and sportsman, Sri Chinmoy devoted his life to promoting inner peace and world harmony. His colourful paintings and delicate drawings reflect this philosophy. Curator Grahak Cunningham said, “He learnt to meditate for up to eight hours a day as a child in India, and he applied this skill when painting or drawing.”

The exhibition is on loan from his collect in New York, where he lived until his passing in 2007. Chinmoy’s art inspires reflection on peace. As he said:

“The bird knows no boundaries. It is a messenger of peace and freedom, born in the garden of the soul and taking flight in the heart. If you do not find peace inside your own heart, then you will not find it anywhere else on Earth.”

The art has drawn comments from Nobel Peace Laureates Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela and Mikhail Gorbachev. These are also on display with the art.
