The City of Mandurah is encouraging local residents to take part in a new community survey to support its Vaping at What Cost? campaign – an initiative aimed at raising awareness about the health risks of vaping, especially among young people.

Vaping continues to be a growing concern across the state, with many people – particularly teens and young adults – unaware of the serious health harms linked to regular use. The Vaping at What Cost? campaign highlights these risks, and the City is now seeking input from the community to better understand public awareness around vaping and nicotine addiction.

Recent changes to vaping laws in Western Australia came into effect in October 2024. These new laws mean vapes intended to help people quit smoking can now only be sold in pharmacies, and only with a doctor’s prescription. It is illegal for all other retailers, such as tobacconists, vape shops and convenience stores, to sell any kind of vape, even if it doesn’t contain nicotine.

These changes are part of a broader effort to reduce harm in the community and address the growing health impacts of vaping. Many vapes contain toxic chemicals also found in cleaning products, weed killers and nail polish removers. Health risks include lung damage, addiction, increased heart disease risk, and changes in brain development – particularly in young people.

While many believe they are not addicted, signs of vaping dependence can include cravings, difficulty stopping, needing to vape in certain settings or during emotional moments, and feeling anxious or restless without it.

Quitting can be challenging, but support is available. The campaign also shares practical tips for those wanting to stop, such as setting a quit date, gradually reducing nicotine levels, and finding healthier habits to replace vaping.

To help inform future education and health initiatives, the City is asking community members to complete a short, confidential survey. The survey takes about five minutes and aims to assess local awareness of the health risks linked to vaping.

Residents are encouraged to visit the Vaping at What Cost? campaign page on the City of Mandurah website to learn more and complete the survey.

By taking part, community members can play an important role in helping to shape a healthier future for Mandurah.
