Shannon was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015.
Sad news with the passing of US actress Shannen Doherty. She was 53.
Doherty’s longtime publicist Leslie Sloane confirmed the news with an exclusive statement to PEOPLE overnight, saying, “It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty. On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease,”
“The devoted daughter, sister, aunt, and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie. The family asks for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace.”
Doherty broke into the world of Hollywood as a child actor on the TV series Little House on the Prairie and went on to star in 80s movie classics like Girls Just Want to Have Fun and Heathers… but was best known for her breakout role as the feisty Brenda Walsh, twin sister to Brandon (Jason Priestly) in the teen cult-series Beverly Hills 90210.
This led her to be cast in another insanely popular TV series - Charmed - as one of the three witchy Halliwell sisters alongside Alyssa Milano and Holly Marie Combs.
Former cast members have paid tribute to their dear friend, including 90210's Brian Austin Green, who said, “Shan. My sister... You loved me through everything. You were a big part of my understanding of love. I’ll miss you more than I know how to process right now. Thank you for the gift of you.”
Shannen also hosted a podcast show titled 'Let's be Clear', and in the last episode she recorded, she spoke about her ongoing chemo treatment and prognosis.
Vale, Shannen Doherty.
