The family declared their win almost three weeks after the draw.
It's an extra happy holiday season for one Byford family, now revelling in their $1.3 million lottery win.
They waited almost three weeks to come forward, after purchasing the ticket from Haynes Good News Agency in Brookdale.
A syndicate of five purchased the winning slip, but had been unaware of their million dollar status under recently remembering to check the ticket.
“I was adamant to tell the family together,” the mother said.
“So I got them around the table and on the phone, told them we’d won big and then slowly read out the prize value and winning numbers.
“Everyone thought it was a joke and that I’d gone mad!”
The family said there were tears of joy celebrating their win and reflecting on the family’s husband and father who recently passed away.
“He was convinced we’d win big one day and we have great memories of him talking about his dream to win Lotto,” the mother said.
The latest prize claim comes only weeks before one of the nation’s most anticipated Lotto events of the year – the $30 million Megadraw on Saturday 29 December.
“This is one of our biggest annual draws and we expect about one in two WA adults to pick up a ticket,” said Lotterywest spokesperson Pina Compagnone.
“A share in the $30 million prize pool could be the perfect way to ring in the New Year.”
