The City of Rockingham have announced the public has chosen Bait Ball by artist Richard Aitken as the winner of the 2020 Castaways Fremantle Ports People's Choice Award.
Now in its twelfth year, Castaways is the City's premier arts and culture event and gives emerging artists the opportunity to showcase their pieces.
Aitken, who was the winner of the 2019 Castaways Water Corporation Sustainability Award, returned this year with his sculpture Bait Ball, which used old mattress springs with attached cut aluminium fish.
Castaways comprises of three exhibitions including the main exhibition on the Rockingham Beach foreshore, the Schools Exhibition at Churchill Park and the Maquette and Small Sculpture Exhibition at the Rockingham Arts Centre.
City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels said Bait Ball narrowly inched out Trogodor the Scrap Dragon by Peter James to secure the $1,000 Castaways Fremantle Ports People's Choice Award.
"The 2020 edition of Castaways had a variety of stunning sculptures and the level of competition on display between the different categories was a sight to behold for thousands of visitors to the exhibitions," he said.
"The votes have since been counted and Richard Aitken's Bait Ball was the standout for the public."
Fremantle Ports Manager Corporate and Community Relations Neil Stanbury said Bait Ball was an outstanding example of marine-oriented sculptural creativity.
"We love supporting Castaways through the People's Choice Award and Richard Aitkens' work is absolutely brilliant. We love it. Well done to him and all the entrants."
