Mayor Rhys Williams has today confirmed that Crab Fest 2020 will not go ahead due to the CONVID-19 Caronavirus pandemic.
“In light of the evolving status of coronavirus since last night we sought the Chief Health Officer’s recommendation on Crab Fest, which was that it should not go ahead,” the Mayor said.
“Based on that most recent advice and in the interests of the health and wellbeing of our community, we have decided to cancel Crab Fest.
“This is not a decision we have taken lightly and given how important Crab Fest is to our local businesses, community and economy we are devastated that we have had to cancel.
“Ultimately, the health and wellbeing of our community is paramount.
“I take this opportunity to thank the Chief Health Officer for his clear advice on this matter.
“Currently the City’s main concern is for the local businesses involved, who are wonderful contributors to our economy and community and depend on the event.
“We will work closely with our local businesses to help minimise the impact where possible.
“It has been an emotional period for all involved and we acknowledge and sincerely thank the many people who have invested their time and resources into the event.
“There are many questions that we do not have answers to just yet, however we give our assurance that the City will work with our sponsors, partners, stakeholders and community to keep them informed and supported as we progress through this together.
“To date we have been overwhelmed by the positive responses we have received from our community, and this is testament to the strength and connectedness of Mandurah’s people.
“These are tough challenges to navigate through; however, the Mandurah community is strong and together we will work through this.”
