A free hop-on, hop-off Sunday tram service will be the newest tourist attraction in Rockingham when it welcomes its first passengers later this month.
The highly visible Rediscover Rockingham Tram will begin services on February 21, shuttling passengers on a loop around Rockingham’s key coastal sights.
Travelling an 18.2 km circular route, the single carriage replica tram will stop at Rockingham Museum, Rockingham Foreshore, Point Peron and the Penguin Island ferry terminal at Mersey Point.
The complete journey takes about one hour to complete, with passengers able to enjoy the round trip or use the service as a courtesy shuttle to beaches, historic attractions and aquatic wildlife encounters.
Mayor Barry Sammels said the City would trial the Sunday tram service until the April school holidays as a way to encourage people to get out and about in Rockingham.
“The Rediscover Rockingham Tram will seat up to 35 people and provide a fun way for locals and visitors alike to take in our stunning coastline,” Mayor Sammels said.
“Whether you are off to Penguin Island for the day or want to explore some of our best beaches, the tram is a great way to Rediscover Rockingham.
"You can hop on or off at any of the four stops and enjoy the scenic ride while the tram driver provides live commentary about Rockingham’s sights and history along the way.”
Free untimed parking is available for people who choose to board the tram at Tram Stop 1 – Rockingham Museum at the rear carpark on Kent Street.
Rediscover Rockingham Tram timetables can be downloaded from rockingham.wa.gov.au/tram or collected from the Rockingham Visitor Centre, Perth Wildlife Encounters and Rockingham Museum.
Scheduled departure times are also listed at each tram stop.
