The Department of Health is urging people to get their flu jabs following the death of a 10-year-old Perth boy.

The boy's life support was switched off at Perth Children's Hospital on Monday afternoon following complications from the influenza virus.

It is understood he first presented at hospital last week with a fever but his condition quickly deteriorated after he had a seizure.

11 people in WA have now died from flu-related illnesses this year, compared with four at the same time last year.

Data from the Department of Health shows the number of reported cases in WA this year has risen to 3887.

There were 1216 cases for the same time last year.

People aged 65 years or older, children 6 months to five years and pregnant women are eligible for a free flu vaccine.
