Peel region motorists will soon benefit from a major upgrade of the Kwinana Freeway.
The $49 million Kwinana Freeway project, which will see an extra lane added between Russell Road and Roe Highway northbound, will create 340 jobs and will improve travel times by up to 15 minutes in the morning peak.
WA Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said the Kwinana Freeway project would boost the local economy and was part of the State Government's plan to ease congestion, improve roads and save motorists time.
"The Kwinana Freeway Widening project will add eight kilometres of additional lane and provide capacity for an extra 1,800 vehicles per hour, improving traffic flow for those commuting to the CBD or our northern suburbs," Ms Saffioti said.
Baldivis MLA Reece Whitby said the project will improve the quality of life of thousands of local residents.
“The notorious Cockburn bottleneck is hated by thousands of southern suburbs motorists and now we are going to fix it,” Mr Whitby said.
“The current issue is the traffic snare around Cockburn which has a massive knock-on effect, slowing traffic all the way back down to Baldivis at times.
“The big winners will be daily drivers from Baldivis, Wellard, Bertram, Waikiki and across the Rockingham region.
“The first works motorists will notice will be the appearance of 80km per hour speed signs on the northbound stretch between Russell Road and Roe Highway, a slight reduction in lane width and the moving of lanes to the right, closer to the rail corridor.
“Construction will run from now until late 2019 and motorists will need to be patient and more aware of driving conditions while the works are underway. However, the payoff will be well worth it with a faster freeway and a quicker drive to work each morning."
