The next installment of the Community Youth Art Project has been unveiled in Halls Head.
Two Western Power electricity boxes now feature artwork designed by students from two local high schools around Mandurah.
Mandurah Mayor Rhys Williams said the project was designed to strengthen community pride and connection in young people, develop artistic skills and reduce graffiti on public property.
“The Western Power boxes have been chosen because they are notorious graffiti hotspots and urban art has proven to be an effective strategy to stop it,” he said.
The artwork on Honeysuckle Ramble in Halls Head was designed by four students from Halls Head College.
Working with a local Mandurah artist, the students captured photographic images to form a collage which was then digitally printed onto vinyl wrap and installed onto the power box.
“What once were relatively unattractive boxes on the side of the road are now awesome pieces of art. These students really have done an impressive job," Mayor Williams said.
In 2018, students from Coodanup College designed artwork for a Western Power box on Allnutt Street and Thomas Street in Mandurah.
The Community Youth Art team aims to complete two Western Power locations each year, engaging with two local high schools to complete the power box art installations.
