20 local students competed in the finals of the Canning Shakespeare Competition 2019 on Saturday 31 August.
The students performed monologues from the works of Shakespeare live onstage at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre.
The performances were judged by three professional actors: Glenda Linscott, Senior Lecturer in Acting at the Western Australia Performing Arts Academy (WAAPA); Julia Moody, who recently returned from teaching at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (UK); and Hamish White, an emerging young actor from WAAPA.
Member for Canning Andrew Hastie said there was plenty of passion and talent displayed in this year's performances.
“It’s a privilege to organise this competition on ever year, and I admire these students for taking a risk and having a go. I hope they were able to learn and grow from the experience.”
The Canning Shakespeare Competition is an annual event run by Hastie, which provides senior high school students interested in literature, drama and public speaking an opportunity to gain performance experience, meet industry experts and engage with the works of Shakespeare.
