The final for the City of Rockingham’s 2022 Breakthrough Music Competition was held last month with a talented line-up of young musicians shining on stage at The Lookout on the Rockingham Foreshore.

Breakthrough is an annual competition held by the City for young people aged 12 – 24 and provides an opportunity to showcase their musical talent.

It offers a potential pathway for those wanting to develop their career in the music industry and get exposure to performing live in front of an audience.

Participants in this year’s competition performed for the chance to win studio recording time, interviews on local radio, cash prizes and performance opportunities.

The winners for Breakthrough 2022 included:

-    Lights Out (Band category winners)

-    Gisella (Junior category)

-    Luke Newman (Senior Category).

City of Rockingham Mayor Deb Hamblin, who was a special guest judge for the final, congratulated the winning performers on their efforts.

“Breakthrough gives young musicians a chance to fast-track their career in the music industry, and also showcases the diverse range of outstanding musical talent in our City,” Mayor Hamblin said.

“The talents displayed in this year’s competition were of a very high standard, and all performers should be immensely proud of their efforts. Every year the City is delighted to offer this musical opportunity to local young people, and we congratulate the winners in their respective categories.”

In the build up to the final, performers navigated a series of heats which were held at Rockingham Youth Centre, Warnbro Shopping Centre and Stockland Baldivis Shopping Centre.
