Man charged over lighting a bushfire in Australind

Bunbury Detectives have charged a 25-year-old man in relation to a lighting a bushfire in Australind on Friday, 20 December 2019.

It will be alleged the man deliberately set fire to grass near the Collie River in the vicinity of Eaton Drive and The Boulevard, causing a fire that he was not able to control.   

A member of the public saw the flames and contacted emergency services.  Department of Fire and Emergency Services attended and extinguished the fire.

The man from Eaton has been charged with:-
•    Wilfully Light or Cause to be Lit a Fire Likely to Injure or Damage.

This offence carries a maximum sentence of 20 years.

Prompt information provided by members of the public was vital in extinguishing this fire with minimal risk to lives and property, and identifying the offender.
