It has taken three years to fix, but the 25-metre indoor pool at the Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre (MARC) will reopen on May 6.
Works to replace the roof above the pool are now complete after it was damaged by a storm back in May 2021.
It has been a mammoth process to get the job done with the City struggling to find a contractor to carry out the works.
The City then accepted a $6.7 million quote from PCB Contractors in December, a huge jump from the previously estimated $2.6 million in 2021.
Mayor Rhys Williams thanked the community for their patience throughout the project.
“We are certainly looking forward to re-opening the 25m indoor pool on 6 May and welcoming back this refurbished space,” he said.
“As well as the roof replacement, other maintenance and refurbishment works to the indoor pool including refilling and testing, and repairs to tiling, stainless steel ladders and handrails and the pool liner have also now been fully completed and the pool is now ready for public use.”
The wellness centre, which includes the spa and sauna, has also been newly renovated and will reopen by May 13, 2024.
Once the 25-metre indoor pool returns to full operation, scheduled maintenance and minor upgrades will get underway at the adjacent leisure pool.
These works are expected to take six weeks during which time the leisure pool will not be accessible to customers.
Programs such as children’s swim school lessons will be moved to the indoor 25m pool during this time.
It's expected the leisure pool will reopen to the public in late June.
