Nominations open soon for City of Rockingham local government elections

City of Rockingham residents looking to make a difference in their community are encouraged to nominate as a candidate in the upcoming local government elections.

Local government elections are held every two years on the third Saturday in October, with this year’s elections to be held on 19 October 2019.

Residents have the chance to vote in a postal ballot during the weeks leading up to the election, with votes officially counted on 19 October.

The process is administered by the Western Australian Electoral Commission.

Six councillor positions will be contested during the elections, with each position having a four year term.

Following a recent ward boundary and councillor representation review the number of wards in the City will be reduced from four to three.

The three wards are Baldivis Ward, Comet Bay Ward and Rockingham/Safety Bay Ward.

There will be two vacancies in the Baldivis Ward up for election, one in the Comet Bay Ward and three in the Rockingham/Safety Bay Ward.

City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels encouraged community members considering running to step forward.

“Local government elections are a fantastic opportunity for members of the community to put their hand up and run for Council,” Mayor Sammels said.

“The role of a councillor is a challenging yet rewarding one and gives residents the chance to represent their constituents and shape the future of their City.

“It is important that Council represents the diverse and wide ranging views of the community and I encourage anyone that wants to make change in our City to nominate for this year’s local government elections.”

Nominations for candidates open on Thursday September 5, 2019 and close at 4pm on Thursday September 12, 2019.
