The RAC has released their Used Car Safety Ratings Guide, after assessments of vehicles from over eight million real-life crashes.
300 different models were assessed, with only 23 per cent scoring the five-star rating.
The Honda City manufactured between 2009 and 2013 was the only vehicle from the 'light cars' category to receive the top safety rating.
Slightly bigger cars given the five-stars include the Mazda 3, Toyota Prius and Nissan Pulsar.
The popular Toyota Corolla manufactured between 2002 and 2007 was among the vehicles with just one-star, as well as the Holden Cruze 2002 to 2006.
Police Minister Michelle Roberts said the State Government is determined to keep WA roads safe.
"Buying safer cars should not just be for those who can afford the latest models," she said.
"Many of these vehicles are available for less than $10,000, and that means that there are safe vehicles available for every budget."
