Registrations open for Clean Up Australia Day

Residents across the City of Rockingham are encouraged to participate in Clean Up Australia Day 2019, with registrations for the event now open.

Clean Up Australia Day originated in 1989 and has grown into a national event that focuses on cleaning up rubbish in communities across Australia.

Since starting 30 years ago, volunteers across the country have collected the equivalent of 350,000 ute-loads of rubbish.

People looking to get involved in Clean Up Australia Day 2019 can register either as a community group, business, youth group or as a school.

Those unable to participate can also help by making a donation.

Businesses registered for the event will clean up in their local community on Tuesday February 26 while schools and youth groups will collect litter on Friday March 1.

Community groups will take to the streets on the weekend of 2-3 March.

City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels urged residents to register and help clean up their community.

“Clean Up Australia Day has become a major annual event, with many residents in our City joining forces with thousands across Australia to help clean up local parks, beaches and reserves,” Mayor Sammels said.

“We are fortunate to live in a City that is blessed with 37 km of pristine coastline, beautiful nature reserves and several conservation significant wetlands. It’s vital we preserve our wonderful environmental assets, so I encourage all residents to get involved in Clean Up Australia Day 2019.

“Not only will the event boost sustainability and help foster community connectedness between participants, it will also give residents and visitors the chance to enjoy everything that’s great about Rockingham in a clean environment.”

When registering to take part on the Clean Up Australia website, people can request to have the City collect their litter bags after public clean up events.

The City’s LitterBusters team will assist with the collection of these bags and will recycle any items where possible.
