The City of Rockingham has announced that the Rockingham Alzheimer’s and Dementia walking group (RAD Walkers) will return from Friday 7 August, 2020.

RAD Walkers provides an opportunity for people living with dementia and their carers to walk with others in a friendly, supportive, non-judgemental and uplifting environment.

Since it was first formed by the City in May 2018, many residents have embraced the opportunity to improve their physical and mental health by participating in the group. Regular meetings of the group were postponed earlier this year due to COVID-19 but will soon resume in-line with eased restrictions.

RAD Walkers takes place on the first and third Friday of each month, from 10am -11am at the Village Green, Flinders Lane, Rockingham. People living with dementia and their carers with all levels of walking abilities and walking aids are welcome. The walk takes place on a circular route, with plenty of seating available at regular intervals.

Mayor Barry Sammels said the City was committed to fulfilling its Strategic Community Plan aspiration of growing and nurturing community connectedness and wellbeing through programs such as the RAD Walkers group.

“Living with dementia, or caring for a person living with dementia, can be a lonely and challenging experience. Getting together with a friendly group that truly understands what living with this condition is like can be very rewarding, which is why as a dementia friendly City we are delighted to see the RAD Walkers group return,” Mayor Sammels said.

“Dementia is the single greatest cause of disability in older Australians and it is projected that the number of people in Rockingham living with dementia will significantly increase over the next 30 years. By 2050 the number will be six times higher than it was in 2010. At that point, the City is projected to be the local government with the third highest number of people living with dementia in the metropolitan area.”
