Rockingham Police ask for public's help to find copper cable thieves

PIC: File

Copper cable thieves have struck again with Rockingham Police urging the public to come forward with information.

An unknown number of offenders gained access to three underground pits along Ennis Avenue on Tuesday, February 17 and Wednesday, February 18.

The first happened between 10am and 12pm on Tuesday in the area of Ennis Avenue, Carvie Street and Council Avenue, the second happened between 10am and 12pm on Wednesday at the intersection of Ennis Avenue and Grange Drive and the third later that day between 1.30pm and 3.30pm at the intersection of Ennis Avenue and Rae Road.

On each occasion the electrical cabling that services the street lights were cut.

The theft of copper cable has been an ongoing issue for years with many street lights in the Rockingham and Mandurah areas still out along stretches of main roads.

"The theft of copper cable is a growing issue for Main Roads, but we are working closely with a range of agencies (including WA Police) to mitigate the impacts and prosecute those illegally accessing vital public infrastructure, including assisting with identification of Main Roads’ stolen cable when recovered," a Main Roads spokesperson said last year.

"As a result of copper cable theft, there are currently lighting outages across the road and path network, and Main Roads is working to restore these as soon as possible . The agency is working on new technologies and solutions to address the issue such as lockable pit lids."

Anyone with any information or footage in relation to this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers online via www.crimestopperswa.com.au or by calling 1800 333 000.
