Primary and secondary students from Cooloongup Primary School and Living Waters Lutheran College have taken the concept of street art to a new level, winning the Act-Belong-Commit Schools Take pART Competition for 2020.
Schools Take pART is sponsored by the City and encourages young people to express themselves culturally and artistically through street art in selected areas.
Both schools competed against other local primary and secondary schools for the chance to have their design transformed into a mural within the City of Rockingham.
These murals were completed in October 2020. The theme for this year’s competition was ‘Be the Change You Want to See.’
The Cooloongup Primary School mural is located at the Grange Physiotherapy Health Hub on Goddard Street and the Living Waters Lutheran College mural is located at the Vicinity Rockingham Centre (near the entrance to Coles).
City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels congratulated the winning schools on their outstanding artistic efforts.
“The Act-Belong-Commit Schools Take pART Competition has the potential to change the way we think about urban art in public spaces, while at the same time providing young people with an opportunity to express themselves artistically,” Mayor Sammels said.
“The competition builds community partnerships and shares positive messages around mental health and the effects of graffiti in our community.
“Art like this has the potential to transform an otherwise plain public space and the City congratulates all of the students involved for creating something positive that will leave a lasting impression.”
