Two teenage boys have been charged over a lengthy police chase through Cockburn and Rockingham.

It's alleged the 16 and 17-year-old boys were initially spotted riding stolen motorcycles in the Cockburn Central area on Friday afternoon.

Around 1.05pm, the police helicopter sighted the same two boys, who were not wearing helmets, riding the motorcycles near Wentworth Parade and Beeliar Drive.

The chopper followed the riders through several southern suburbs and it's alleged they failed to stop for police officers on the ground.

Police allege the motorbikes were being ridden in a reckless manner, speeding down pedestrian pathways, through bushland, on the wrong side of the road and through red traffic lights.

One of the motorbikes was then abandoned on Port Royal Drive in Safety Bay, with the rider of that bike becoming a pillion passenger on the second one.

It's alleged the boys then abandoned the second motorbike at Rockingham Shopping Centre.

Both of them were taken into custody a short time later.

Police allege the 16-year-old boy stole clothes from a store inside the shopping centre in an attempt to alter his appearance.

The boy from Rockingham and the 17-year-old boy from Ellenbrook have each been charged with failing to stop, reckless driving, no authority to drive, stealing a motor vehicle and attempting to steal a motor vehicle.

Both were refused bail and are due to appear in the Perth Children’s Court today.
