Woman allegedly doused in petrol and set alight

PIC: File

Armadale police are calling on witnesses after a serious assault in Oakford, where a woman was allegedly doused in petrol and set alight.

It is alleged around 8am on September 14, a 31-year-old woman and a male passenger were driving a 2003 red/maroon Mazda Tribute when it ran out of fuel on Nicholson Road.

As a result, the woman got out of the car and started walking to a service station, carrying an empty plastic bag.

Police believe around 10am, a man driving a blue Holden Commodore stopped to help the woman, took her to Harrisdale service station and dropped her back to her vehicle.

It is alleged the man who stayed behind in the Mazda Tribute became upset with the woman.

She tried to get away from him by running towards Thomas Road but the man allegedly grabbed her, poured petrol on her and set her alight.

The 31-year-old managed to put out the fire, but received singed hair and burns to her neck and ear.

As a result, a 38-year-old man from Maddington was charged with unlawful act with intent to harm and common assault in circumstances of aggravation.

He appeared in the Perth Magistrates Court September 16 and is due to reappear on October 1.

Detectives wish to speak to the man driving the blue ute, anyone with dashcam footage of the area between 8am and 10.15am.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or report online at www.crimestopperswa.com.au.
