National Horror Movie Day is celebrated each year on October 23. 
It was launched in 2023, chosen to honour the birthday of horror-film pioneer Sam Raimi.

Here are ten highly-regarded horror films, drawn from compilations of the genre’s greatest.

These span decades and styles -  perfect choices for horror fans old and new.

  1. Psycho (1960) — A seminal Hitchcock film that defined psychological horror.

  2. The Shining (1980) — Kubrick’s haunting look at isolation and terror. 

  3. Alien (1979) — Sci-fi horror at its finest; atmospheric, intense, and ground-breaking. 

  4. The Thing (1982) — Body horror meets paranoia in Antarctica; now recognised as a genre classic.

  5. Jaws (1975) — Terrifying the beach-goers and revolutionising thriller-horror cinema. 

  6. The Exorcist (1973) — One of the most iconic and influential horror films ever made. 

  7. Halloween (1978) — John Carpenter’s slasher masterpiece that spawned an entire genre.

  8. The Babadook (2014) — A modern horror gem, critically acclaimed and deeply psychological. 

  9. Poltergeist (1982) — A suburban nightmare that remains a staple of supernatural horror.
