The original version of the title track was called Starlight with the chorus lyric: “Give me some starlight / Starlight sun…”
Producer Rod Temperton wrote the song but felt “Starlight” wasn’t strong or spooky enough. He started brainstorming new names, and Thriller came to him overnight. He jotted it down on a piece of paper, along with 200 other options. Yes, 200!
It changed everything.... Thriller went on to become the best-selling album of all time, with over 70 million copies sold.
And that iconic Vincent Price monologue? It was added after the title change, to really amp up the creep factor.
