Australia is mourning the loss of one of its most iconic voices... Dennis Cometti.
The sad news broke yesterday that the golden voiced commentator had passed away after an illness at 76.
Cometti’s career spanned more than five decades, and his smooth delivery, dry humour and quick wit made him a beloved commentator across AFL, cricket and swimming.
Born in Geraldton, Western Australia, he started out on radio in 1968 before becoming one of the country’s most recognisable sports voices on television and radio, calling multiple AFL grand finals and becoming the only broadcaster to cover the national league from its inception.
Fans will remember him not just for his insight, but for his unforgettable “Cometti-isms” - clever, quirky and often hilarious lines that became part of football culture.
He was also honoured with a Member of the Order of Australia and inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame for his outstanding contribution to sports media.
Dennis Cometti’s golden voice inspired generations of fans, and on every footy night when the game kicked off, he made many of us feel like we were right there in the stands alongside him.
A documentary titled ‘Centimetre Perfect’ - celebrating the life and career of Dennis Cometti - will air later this year on Seven & 7plus.

Well, our own pop princess, Delta Goodrem has been announced as Australia’s representative for this year’s Eurovision Song Contest.
She will take to the Europe stage in May, in Vienna, marking a major moment for Australia’s ongoing involvement in the international music event. Goodrem said she’s honoured and thrilled to represent Australia, and her song ‘Eclipse’ is set to stun the world stage.
