The City of Mandurah has partnered with South Metropolitan Health Service (SMHS) to prevent falls in the Mandurah community and help older adults stay on their feet.
The free ‘Move Your Body’ sessions will be held at the Mandurah Seniors and Community Centre every Friday for the next six weeks.
The sessions will include falls prevention education, balance and strength exercises including chair yoga, and a morning tea afterwards to connect with other participants.
The project has been funded by Injury Matters as part of the Stay On Your Feet® Move Your Body grants program.
SMHS Manager Health Promotion and Community Development Richard Crane said falls and fall-related injuries were the leading cause of injury hospitalisation for older adults in the Mandurah community.
“The good news is falls are preventable,” he said.
“Staying physically active is one of the most effective things older adults can do to maintain health and wellbeing.
"Thirty minutes of strength and balance exercises on most days can reduce your risk of having a fall.”
The City of Mandurah is committed to providing opportunities for older adults to improve their health and wellbeing. The Public Health and Wellbeing Plan 2020-2023 promotes active lifestyles and social connection for active ageing.
