The City's residents are encouraged to nominate a group or individual that has made the community a better place as part of the Community Citizen of the Year Awards 2021.
The awards are presented on Australia Day at the City’s Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony on 26 January. They recognise organisations and people who have made a notable contribution during the current year and/or those who have given outstanding service over a number of years.
Four categories are available including Community Citizen of the Year, Young Community Citizen of the Year (under 25 years of age), Senior Community Citizen of the Year (over 65 years of age) and Active Citizenship – Group or Event.
In 2020 eco-tourism operator Terry Howson was recognised as Community Citizen of the Year for his work with Rockingham Wild Encounters, while Kelly Crothers was recognised as the Community Citizen of the Year - Youth (Under 25 years of age) for her leadership in volunteer work.
Meanwhile, Gillian Harris was recognised as Community Citizen of the Year – Senior (Over 65 years of age) for her work with Coastal Districts Care Centre and Anglicare. No nominations were received for the Active Citizenship – Group or Event category.
“There are a number of organisations and residents across the City who put in a significant amount of work to make our community a better place to live, and quite often they do this work with little recognition for their efforts,” City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels said.
“These people are the heart and soul of the community and the Australia Day Council WA, Community Citizen of the Year Awards are the perfect opportunity to highlight their achievements.”
Nominations for the Community Citizen of the Year Awards 2021 close on 31 October 2020.
