The Mandurah Magic men have a new NBL1 West head coach with the appointment of Devondrick Walker.
Walker will coach the side for the next three seasons and has also been appointed the club’s Head of Performance.
He takes over from Mark Utley who served four seasons at the helm of the Magic, taking them to their first ever NBL1 West Championship in 2024.
Walker is no stranger to the NBL1 West competition having played for the Rockingham Flames between 2022 and 2024.
He then signed with the Geraldton Buccaneers for the 2026 season helping them reach the grand final where they lost to Rockingham 66-62.
Walker — a professional American basketballer — has an established playing career across the USA, Europe and Australia, and professional coaching experience with the WNBL's Perth Lynx.
“From the first conversation I had with Devondrick, it was his passion to work with and develop athletes that really stood out," Mandurah Magic General Manager Brent Barclay said.
"As we develop our local performance strategy in both WABL and NBL1 spheres, bringing Devondrick into the team really enables us to progress and offer the best for our athletes."
Walker said he was grateful for the opportunity.
“The opportunity to develop hungry young talent while aspiring to be the best coach I can was a no brainer for me," he said.
"The decisions, sacrifices, and experiences on and off the court have lead me to this moment and it’s one I’m grateful for and will give my all to.
“My goal is to bring discipline, accountability, and overall joy to the WABL and NBL1 programs, top to bottom. I want the gym to feel like a sanctuary, safe place and a setting to always feel welcome.
"I will lean on my experiences as a player and coach to develop the organisation and contribute to a positive high-performance culture."
