Aged care staff and residents in the City of Rockingham will be some of the first to receive a COVID-19 vaccine this week.
The first 4500 doses of the Pfizer vaccine arrived in WA on Sunday with hundreds of hotel quarantine staff and frontline health care workers receiving the jab today.
About 1000 vaccines will be delivered to aged care homes today in nine suburbs across the state including Cooloongup, Port Kennedy, Rockingham, Shoalwater and Waikiki.
Western Australians who receive the Pfizer jab will be required to get a second dose three weeks after the first.
Both the Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines will not prevent the transmission of Coronavirus but will lessen the severity of the virus if it is contracted.
Australian Medical Association WA President Dr Andrew Miller is urging people to get the jab when it is their turn.
"When you get an opportunity to get a vaccine, doesn't matter when, doesn't matter who, doesn't matter how, roll up your sleeve and do the right thing by yourself, your family and the country."
The vaccines are being stored at -80C in a special freezer at Perth Children's Hospital.
