Preservation works are underway to protect a 200-year-old tuart tree in Greenfields.
The much-loved 'Big Tree' is located at the intersection of Pinjarra Road and Old Pinjarra Road and is listed on the City's Significant Tree Register.
Following the discovery of a significant structural crack, the City engaged specialist arborists and structural engineers to assess the tree and determine the safest long-term management approach.
As part of earlier preservation efforts, approximately 30 per cent of the canopy was carefully removed in 2022 to reduce weight and stress on the trunk, while still maintaining the tree’s overall health and character.
The next stage of works, scheduled to start in May, will see the installation of a certified specialist support system designed to further improve the Big Tree’s structural stability.
The system will include static cables and textile straps, along with minor adjustments to the adjacent footpath to support the works.
The measures are expected to significantly extend the life of the tree, helping it remain a feature of the Greenfields landscape.
City of Mandurah Mayor Amber Kearns said the project reflected the City’s commitment to caring for the places the community values most.
“Trees like the Big Tree are more than just part of our landscape – they are living landmarks that hold memories, meaning and connection for our community,” Mayor Kearns said.
“We know how special this tree is to local residents, and that’s why we’ve taken a careful, expert-led approach to ensure it can continue to be enjoyed safely by future generations.”
Residents are encouraged to take note of any temporary changes in the area during the works, with traffic and pedestrian access impacts expected to be minimal.
