A pair of emus have been struck by a car in Dawesville just hours after they were caught on video taking a dip in a backyard swimming pool.

Locals reported seeing the emus walking along residential streets on Tuesday.

At one point the duo made their way into Callum Layton's backyard where he videoed them swimming in his pool and drinking water from his dog bowls.

Sadly, the emus were hit by a car on Old Coast Road near Tims Thicket turnoff later in the night.

According to wildlife rescuers, one suffered a broken leg and the other a knock to the head.

The pair will now be cared for by experienced vets at WA Wildlife.

"Thank you to everyone who cared so much for the welfare of these emus and kept track of them yesterday," an update on the Dawesville Community Facebook page read.

"They are now in good hands and we can only hope for a good outcome for both emus."
