A shark advice has been issued after a whale carcass was reported near Herring Bay on Garden Island.
A shark advice has been issued, due to a whale carcass being reported on the northern side of Garden Island near Herring Bay.
The whale was reported by a member of the public around midday on Thursday. The beached carcass is described as a Short Fin Pilot Whale measuring up to five metres in length.
Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development said it was possible the carcass could be attractant that could lead to sharks coming close in to shore along the stretch of coast.
The Department said while it’s not uncommon for sharks to be present off the Western Australian coast throughout the year, people should exercise additional caution while authorities deal with this situation.
Surf Live Saving WA said beach goers should adhere to closure signs advised by local government rangers or Surf Life Saving WA.
Officers from the Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Attractions are conducting a sea patrol in the area and will assess the situation.
Fisheries officers from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development are providing advice to the relevant authorities.
