A humpback whale has beached itself at Long Point in Port Kennedy.

The whale was spotted swimming close to shore on Wednesday morning but by 11.00am it had become stuck on the sand bank.

In a video shared to West Coast Radio, members of the public can be seen in the water close to the whale trying to coax it back out to sea.

The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) are currently at the beach and are assessing the situation.

"DBCA officers are liaising with veterinarians to assess the whale’s health and determine the most appropriate course of action," a DBCA spokesperson said.

"Port Kennedy beach is being closed to the public. Members of the public are asked to stay away from the area for their own safety and to avoid causing further stress to the animal.

"It is likely the whale will attract sharks to the area."
